**World on Edge: Israel and Iran Exchange Fierce Strikes as Trump Claims Peace ‘Easily Achievable’** **By Alexander Cornwell and Parisa Hafezi | 15 June 2025**
A fresh wave of deadly attacks between Israel and Iran has reignited global fears of a broader Middle East war, as US President Donald Trump claimed the conflict "can be easily ended"—while simultaneously warning Tehran against targeting American interests.
Overnight into Sunday, missiles lit up the skies across Israel and Iran. In the Israeli city of Ashkelon, scenes of destruction played out as Iranian rockets were intercepted mid-air. Meanwhile, Israeli airstrikes devastated several sites in Tehran, including energy facilities and residential areas.
Israeli authorities confirmed **at least seven deaths**, including a 10-year-old boy, a young girl, and a woman in her 20s, with over **140 injured** in the latest barrage. Rescue operations in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv, continued after a missile collapsed an eight-story building. Dozens remain missing.
Iran responded with fury. According to state media, **78 Iranians were killed** on the first day of Israel's campaign, and another **60 people died** on the second day when a missile collapsed a 14-storey residential tower in Tehran. A majority of the victims were children.
Tehran reported targeted strikes on its **Shahran oil depot**, the **Defence Ministry**, and the **South Pars gas field**—the latter causing a temporary suspension in production. Global oil prices surged **9% on Friday** as fears of regional supply disruption escalated.
Amid the chaos, Trump posted on Truth Social:
> “If we are attacked in any way… the full strength and might of the US Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before.”
> “However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict.”
However, the situation on the ground tells a different story. Iran swiftly **cancelled nuclear talks** that were due to be held in Oman, citing “barbarous” Israeli attacks. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said negotiations were impossible under current conditions.
The conflict’s scope widened as **Yemen’s Houthi rebels**, Iran-aligned militants, claimed they had fired ballistic missiles into central Israel—marking the first involvement from Iran’s regional allies.
In Israel, millions sheltered in bunkers as sirens wailed through **Jerusalem, Haifa, and Tel Aviv** overnight. The Israeli military intercepted dozens of incoming missiles, but not all were stopped.
So far, **at least 10 Israelis** have died and more than **300 injured** since Iran began retaliatory strikes on Friday.
The international community is on high alert. Observers fear the fighting could evolve into a multi-front regional war, especially as Israel vows the campaign "may last weeks" and encourages Iranians to rise up against their government.
With Iran warning that any US or allied intervention would result in strikes on their regional bases, and considering the decimation of Tehran’s proxies like Hamas and Hezbollah, the conflict risks spiraling out of control.
Israel maintains its military action is aimed at halting Iran’s nuclear ambitions, alleging Iran is close to producing a nuclear weapon. Tehran insists its program is strictly civilian, though the UN nuclear watchdog has accused it of breaching non-proliferation obligations.
As the bombs fall and diplomacy collapses, the question remains: Can global leaders pull this region back from the brink?
