**Soweto Teacher’s Tragic Death Raises Chilling Questions About E-Hailing Safety** *By Jeanette Chabalala & Herman Moloi | 13 June 2025 | 3 Min Read*

The Soweto community has been left reeling after the shocking murder of Linda Makhubo, a beloved teacher at Tetelo Secondary School in Protea North. Makhubo, 34, was found dead in a veld in Meadowlands after reportedly requesting an e-hailing ride last Thursday.

### A Ride That Ended in Tragedy

Makhubo’s colleague and close friend, Thandeka Nkambule, broke down as she described the pain of discovering his fate. “We were hopeful, but our worst fears came true when someone sent a photo of his body, dumped with his pants pulled down,” she said.

According to Nkambule, Makhubo messaged her and their school principal last Thursday to say he wouldn't be at work, citing an appointment with lawyers. However, the tone of the message felt off, raising suspicions in hindsight. By Friday, with his phone off and messages unanswered, concern turned into panic.

Nkambule visited his Protea Glen home only to find the gate unlocked and windows open — unusual behavior for Makhubo, who was known to be cautious. “His wallet, bank cards, and even his lip gloss were still inside. It just didn’t make sense,” she said.

### Strangled, Beaten, and Dumped

Autopsy reports confirmed Makhubo died from manual strangulation. His body was severely swollen, showing signs of physical assault. His house keys were also found inside the property, further deepening the mystery.

A single charge from an e-hailing service at 2pm on Thursday was the last traceable activity on his bank account. His WhatsApp status that day showed a vehicle and a caption: "Vosloorus magistrate," which confused those close to him, as he hadn't mentioned any travel plans.

On Sunday evening, a devastating photo confirmed the worst — the body found in Meadowlands was indeed that of Makhubo.

### No Answers Yet

The police have opened a case and visited mortuaries and hospitals in search of leads. As of now, the e-hailing company has not responded to requests for details about the trip — such as the driver or destination — leaving the family and authorities in the dark.

The Gauteng Education Department expressed deep sorrow. MEC Matome Chiloane said:

*"To have lost such an invaluable educator is a loss that ultimately alters the trajectory of our children’s futures."*

### Calls for Accountability

The tragic case adds to growing safety concerns around e-hailing services in South Africa, where passengers have increasingly fallen victim to crime. This incident has reignited calls for stricter driver verification, emergency tracking, and better collaboration between platforms and law enforcement.

As the investigation continues, Makhubo's family and colleagues remain haunted by questions: Who killed him? Why? And could his death have been prevented?
